Patriots speedy WR hopes muscle gain leads to better results.
FOXBOROUGH – Tyquan Thornton isn’t happy with his results. That’s why he’s beefing up.
The lightning-fast wide receiver came to the Patriots as a second-round pick but with a thin frame. Although Thornton has been able to showcase his speed at times, his development as a receiver has been stunted due to two big stints on the injured reserve.
As a rookie, in 2022, Thornton took a hit in the preseason that resulted in a broken collarbone. That forced him to miss the first four weeks of his first season in New England. Last year, Thornton suffered a shoulder injury after making a diving catch in training camp. That caused him to miss the first five weeks of the 2023 NFL season.
This offseason, Thornton worked hard to add weight to make him more durable. The third-year receiver said on Thursday that it’s his goal to play at 190 pounds this season.
“I’m putting in work. I feel like I’ve put on a lot of muscle in a lot of areas that need it. I’m just continuing to get bigger,” Thornton said. “It’s just so I can take more impacts. I feel like all my injuries came from the ground – me hitting the ground. So, it’s so I can be able to bounce back up when I do hit the ground.”
