Wolves chairman Jeff Shi and sporting director Matt Hobbs will sit down with manager Gary O’Neil to offer him a new and improved contract after steering the ship at Molineux.
That’s according to reports from the I Newspaper who claim that the Wolves board are keen to reward O’Neil for his efforts this season after securing a comfortable mid-table finish. The ex-Bournemouth boss arrived at Wolves at a time of great uncertainty just five days before the team’s opening game of the season against Manchester United.
During the summer, Wolves had been forced to sell the likes of Ruben Neves, Raul Jimenez, Conor Coady and Matheus Nunes to avoid breaching FFP regulations. This move sparked the bombshell departure of Julen Lopetegui and left many experts tipping the team for a relegation fight.
O’Neil was initially viewed as an unpopular choice despite steering Bournemouth to safety last term, but has since won over supporters with an exciting brand of football and a string of impressive performances which has seen the likes of Matheus Cunha, Hwang Hee-Chan and Pedro Neto all reach new heights.
He will sit down with Wolves chairman Shi and sporting director Hobbs in the weeks after the season concludes to discuss where they are financially and what can be achieved in the summer window. The 40-year-old initially signed a three-year contract with the club last summer, but the Wolves board are now interested in extending that deal.
