DETROIT — On Sunday afternoon, the Detroit Tigers get set to host the Houston Astros in the final game of their three-game weekend series.

After letting the first game of the series slip away, the Tigers used their bats to leave no doubt on Saturday. Detroit burst out to a big lead thanks to seven runs in the second inning. Mark Canha hit a grand slam in the frame, while Kerry Carpenter hit a two-run shot. Detroit was able to go on cruise control from there, pulling away with an 8-2 victory.
Carpenter, Colt Keith and Spencer Torkelson each had two hits in the win, with Carpenter hitting a second homer in the fourth inning. Tarik Skubal picked up his seventh win of the season thanks to striking out seven, allowing two runs, in 6.1 innings.
Jeremy Pena and Yainer Diaz put up two hits, but ended up stranding eight runners in the losing effort. Cristian Javier was handed his first loss of the season, giving up seven earned runs in 1.1 innings.
The Tigers are still fourth in the American League Central, 3.5 games back of the Cleveland Guardians and Kansas City Royals for first place. The Astros are tied for fourth with the Los Angeles Angels, 7.5 behind the first-place Texas Rangers.
