Former Tigers infielder traded to Braves, his 3rd team in 2024.
Former Detroit Tigers infielder Zack Short has been traded to the Atlanta Braves and will soon be playing for his third big-league team in 2024.
The Boston Red Sox sent Short to Atlanta for cash considerations after he was designated for assignment earlier this week.
Short, who turns 29 next month, was claimed off waivers by New York the Mets last November when the Tigers dropped him from the roster following the 2023 season.
Short made the Mets’ Opening Day roster after a strong spring, but played only sparingly once the season began, going 1-for-9 and starting only three games.
When the Mets DFA’d him two weeks ago, Short was acquired by the Red Sox. That was also a brief stint: Short went 0-for-7 in two games.
Short isn’t likely to play much for the Braves. He’s taking the utility spot of Luis Guillorme, who was traded to the Los Angeles Angels on Thursday after going 3-for-20 in six weeks with the Braves.
The Tigers originally acquired Short from the Chicago Cubs in a trade for outfielder Cameron Maybin in 2020. He played parts of three seasons at the big-league level in Detroit, serving as a utility infielder for most of the 2023 season.
Short hit .204 with a .603 OPS (73 OPS+) in 253 plate appearances over 110 games last year. He played all over the field and regularly entered late in the game as a defensive replacement. Short also pitched six innings in lopsided games, allowing four runs on 12 hits.
