Chiefs reportedly hosting talented free-agent WR.
Will wide receiver Zay Jones’ free-agency tour end with the defending Super Bowl champions?
Per ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter, Jones will meet with the Kansas City Chiefs on Thursday. Although the Jacksonville Jaguars released him last week, multiple teams are interested in the 29-year-old wideout.
Schefter added he previously met with the Dallas Cowboys, Tennessee Titans and Arizona Cardinals.
Jones was disappointed last season due in part to a lingering knee injury. He recorded 34 receptions for 321 yards and two touchdown catches in nine games. In 2022, however, Jones logged a career-high 82 receptions for 823 yards and five TD catches in 16 games.
The Chiefs have a knack for salvaging WR’s careers. In 2022, they signed former Pro Bowler JuJu Smith-Schuster to a one-year deal, and he delivered. In 16 games, he had 78 receptions for 933 yards and three TD catches. Jones, a former second-round pick, could produce similar results.
This offseason, Kansas City prioritized improving its receiving corps. The Chiefs signed former first-rounder WR Marquise Brown to a one-year, $7M deal. They also drafted Texas wideout Xavier Worthy with the 28th overall pick.
Despite the offseason additions, the Chiefs could still use another pass-catcher. In 2023, Kansas City’s receiving corps struggled to make big plays. Per Pro Football Reference, it ranked second to last in the league in average depth of target (6.2) behind the Cincinnati Bengals.
As a result, Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes’ numbers dipped. In 16 games, the two-time MVP completed 67.2 percent of his passes for 4,183 yards and 27 TDs, his lowest figure since 2019. Signing Jones could give Mahomes the help he needs.
