Leicester City attacker sends fresh Leeds United dig as top two hopes now all but over

Leicester City have been unable to resist sending a few little digs towards Leeds United after confirming their promotion.

The Foxes’ immediate return to the Premier League was confirmed after Leeds’ dismal 4-0 defeat at Queens Park Rangers last Friday and it would be fair to say they have enjoyed rubbing it in the Whites’ noses.

And Leeds’ hopes of joining them via the automatic promotion route are now all but over after Ipswich Town’s huge 2-1 victory away at Coventry City, in their game in hand last night.

Ipswich are now three points clear of Leeds having both played 45 matches, and know a point at home to all but relegated Huddersfield Town would be enough to get the job done, regardless of the outcome at Elland Road.

Huddersfield’s manager Andre Breitenreiter has insisted they will be doing everything they can to win, but unfortunately, it is incredibly unlikely.

Leeds will now need to pick themselves up and go again for the play-offs, something Martin O’Neill believes could be difficult.

Stephy Mavididi sends fresh dig to Leeds as top two hopes almost over

Transfers: Leicester sign striker Mavididi

Leicester have been seen and heard firing shots at Leeds almost ever since promotion was done. Their first tweet after it was confirmed read ‘I Predict a Riot’, in response to the song that was played at Elland Road after Leeds’ 3-1 win over the Foxes in February.

The customary ‘Leeds are falling apart again’ has not been too far away from both fans and players’ lips, while ‘I predict the play-offs’ was also sang in Leicester’s end at Deepdale on Monday.

And on Twitter last night, after Leeds’ top two hopes was dealt its biggest blow yet, Leicester attacker Stephy Mavididi sent a fresh dig to the Whites.

He posted a video of himself brushing his teeth with a clip from Georginio Rutter’s post-match interview after the game between the two sides in February, where he said, ‘I think we are the best team’.

Clearly that interviews and those celebrations got on the wrong side of Leicester that night, but to send a jibe to someone whose English is limited at best seems a little harsh.

Ultimately, though, Leicester can enjoy it however they like and hopefully later this month Leeds can also celebrate themselves with promotion via the play-offs.

Farke needs to pick Leeds players up again

Though Daniel Farke is likely to come out in his press conference and say Leeds have a chance on the final day, focus has got to be on the play-offs now.

Given the position they were in over the international break, as well as the recent digs from Leicester, Leeds’ squad will undoubtedly be feeling a little low right now.
