Newcastle United boost as former record signing in line for Burnley re-unite After Deal Were Reached
Eddie Howe has a selection dilemma to contend with this weekend as Miguel Almiron nears his Newcastle United return.
The Paraguayan has not featured since a brief cameo in the 4-3 win over West Ham United. A knee injury has kept Almiron out for five matches, with Jacob Murphy and Anthony Gordon starring on the right flank in his absence.
But the 30-year-old was close to a return against Sheffield United and could make the bench at Burnley. Joelinton, who has been on the sidelines since January’s 3-0 win over Sunderland, is also nearing a comeback.
The Brazilian recently penned a bumper new contract and will be eager to get minutes under his belt before the end of the season. Nick Pope (shoulder) has started training but will not be rushed back – with Martin Dubravka keeping his place.
Kieran Trippier (calf) remains a major doubt and should not make the trip to Turf Moor. An eagle-eyed supporter snapped the 33-year-old in Newcastle Airport on his way to Dubai for rehabilitation, with no risks being taken ahead of Euro 2024.
Howe provided injury updates on all four players before the Blades clash. He said: “They (Joelinton and Almiron) are getting close (but) not close enough for this match, they are all in different positions and difficult to predict when.
“Joelinton visited a specialist recently and has had good news so continues on his comeback. Miggy is there or there about so we are hopeful for next week. Nick is beginning to start early training sessions. But he has not participated in a big group session.
Fabian Schar should also be ok after suffering from hamstring stiffness at the weekend. He was replaced by Emile Krafth at half-time as a precautionary measure.
“Fabian had a bit of tightness in his hamstring,” Howe added. “We don’t think it’s a big injury – there’s not one moment where you think he’s pulled his hamstring – but it was enough to make him feel uncomfortable. He couldn’t fully sprint, so he had to come off.”
