This elite transfer portal player could be a target of the Ohio State football team
The Ohio State football team has been quiet this Spring as far as going after transfer portal players is concerned. One player who just entered the portal could change that.
The Ohio State football program hasn’t really tried to grab a player out of the transfer portal yet this Spring. They have been more focused on improving the players who they have in the locker room now. Now that the Spring Game is done, they have been evaluating who they have.
Surprisingly, the Buckeyes have only lost two players to the portal so far. A lot of players have decided to stick it out with Ohio State. The Buckeyes don’t have a lot of open spots on the roster because of that. Still, one player who recently entered the portal could change that for them.
That player is cornerback Cormani McClain. He entered the transfer portal from Colorado. You might be saying, “Ryan, they already have an elite secondary. They don’t need another corner!”. While they do have a lot of great corners, that’s a position you can never have too much talent.
Before McClain signed with the Buffs, he had the Ohio State football program in his final five schools. He is a former five-star recruit in the 2023 class so you know he’s talented. This past season for Colorado, he had 13 tackles for them. He never quite got to show what he could do there.
If the Buckeyes did decide to pursue McClain, they would have to make it clear that he would be a backup this year. Denzel Burke and Davison Igbinosun are the entrenched starters and Jordan Hancock is entrenched as the nickelback. McClain wouldn’t be ahead of any of those guys on the depth chart.
For that reason, I find it very unlikely that the Buckeyes seriously pursue McClain. He likely won’t want to be a backup again at a new destination. He’s looking for some playing time right off the bat. McClain would certainly be a good depth piece for the future though.
