Patriots Have Eyes on This QB in Potential Trade-Down Scenario
The New England Patriots could target this quarterback if they decided to trade back.
The New England Patriots fanbase has been more in tune with the draft than they have over the past two decades.
They own eight total selections in the 2024 NFL Draft, including three picks in the Top 70. They do have many holes on this roster and could use some extra draft picks to have shots of accumulating talent.
NFL senior reporter Albert Breer released his annual draft column and revealed some fascinating information about the Patriots.
Patriots Rumors: New England Has Their Eyes on This QB Prospect in a Trade Down Scenario
The Pats have done extensive work on this year’s QB class and had four players in for Top 30 visits. One late addition to the list was Michael Penix Jr.
Breer believes he’s someone to watch if the Pats decide to trade back in the first round. He said, “It’s worth noting that Penix was a late addition to the team’s slate of 30 visits—I’ve heard on good authority that was in case the team decides to trade down.”
It shouldn’t come as a surprise to fans if the Pats move back. The Athletic’s Dianne Russini reported on April 22 New England is both listening and taking calls from teams who want to move into the third spot.
They have a lot of voids on the roster so getting more draft picks could go a long way. Especially if they draft a guy like Penix Jr.
He’s pinpoint when throwing the ball while having the arm strength to push the ball downfield. Across two seasons at Washington, Penix Jr. had 9,544 passing yards with 67 passing touchdowns.
He has the football IQ and arm talent to play in this league and has emerged on the Pats radar.
The Pats are still finalizing their draft board but there are plenty of great options to choose from. According to FanDuel Sportsbook, Drake Maye (-140) is the favorite to be the third overall pick. Head over to FanDuel to get $150 in bonus bets after placing a $5 wager.
