Former Coquitlam Express player signs with Philadelphia Flyers

Burnaby’s Massimo Rizzo played three seasons at the University of Denver following his tenure with the Coquitlam Express.

Coquitlam Express alum Massimo Rizzo has signed a two-year entry-level contract with the NHL’s Philadelphia Flyers.

It’s been a big week for the Burnaby centreman, who scored 44 points in 42 games for the Express in the 2019-20 season.

On April 13, Rizzo helped the University of Denver win its 10th NCAA national championship and its second in the three years he played for the Pioneers.

Rizzo finished his junior season at the school with 10 goals and 34 assists in 30 games. He was also named an All-American for the second straight season.

In the 107 games Rizzo played in his collegiate career, he totalled 126 points.

He also played for Canada’s entry at last winter’s Spengler Cup tournament in Switzerland where he scored two points in four games.

Rizzo was originally selected in the seventh round of the 2019 NHL Draft by the Carolina Hurricanes, but he was dealt to the Flyers last August, along with a fifth-round selection in the 2025 draft in exchange for the rights to forward David Kase.

Rizzo’s deal takes effect at the beginning of the 2024-25 NHL season.
