Los Angeles Angels v Boston Red Sox

Red Sox second baseman leaves Saturday’s win with contusion.

BOSTON — Second baseman Enmanuel Valdez left the Red Sox’ 7-2 win against the Angels on Saturday with a left thumb contusion.

Valdez was running the bases in the bottom of the sixth inning when he dived into second base. Angels first baseman Miguel Sanó landed on Valdez’s arm during the quasi-rundown between first and second base on a pickoff attempt.

Valdez didn’t not return for the top of the seventh inning. Pablo Reyes replaced him at second base.

“He should be OK,” manager Alex Cora said about Valdez after Saturday’s game. “He’s not starting tomorrow. So I think he’ll benefit from that. We’ll check on him tomorrow morning but he should be OK.”

The Red Sox already have three infielders — Vaughn Grissom (left hamstring strain), Trevor Story (shoulder surgery) and Romy Gonzalez (left wrist sprain) — on the injured list.

The 25-year-old Valdez has gone 5-for-39 (.128) with a homer, double, six RBIs, six runs, three walks and 13 strikeouts in 13 games so far this season. He has started 12 of Boston’s 15 games at second base.
