Miami Dolphins v New York Jets

Seahawks signing former Pro Bowl guard Laken Tomlinson.

Tomlinson spent the last two seasons with the New York Jets.

The Seattle Seahawks’ Friday news dump is the addition of a veteran left guard who once made the Pro Bowl with the San Francisco 49ers.

ESPN’s Brady Henderson reports that Laken Tomlinson has agreed to join the Seahawks on a one-year contract worth up to $4 million. The 32-year-old was released by the New York Jets, so any compensatory pick observers needn’t worry, as only unrestricted free agents factor into the formula.

Tomlinson was drafted in the first round by the Detroit Lions in 2015. He made 24 starts over two seasons before he was traded to the San Francisco 49ers, where he played for five seasons. The 2021 season saw him make the Pro Bowl after initially being named as an alternate. Tomlinson signed with the New York Jets on a three-year contract in the 2022 offseason. He posted his two worst PFF grades in New York and allowed a career-worst seven sacks in 2023.

From Henderson’s article:

Tomlinson finished 34th among all guards (left or right) in pass block win rate in 2023 and ranks 27th in PBWR as a guard over the past three seasons. He has been an iron man, missing only nine offensive snaps over the past five seasons.

Seattle has a vacancy at left guard following the departure of starter Damien Lewis in free agency. Tomlinson has played all but 65 career snaps at left guard, so he (at least for now) should have the inside track on a starting job. His tremendous durability throughout his career is a major positive. Whether he can return to something close to his best form is a different story altogether.
