Vikings to waive former Texas A&M quarterback Kellen Mond

Why the 49ers Should Sign Kellen Mond
They need four quarterbacks for OTAs, minicamp and training camp, and Mond would be better and more talented than any late-round pick the 49ers could draft.

The 49ers might have just found their third-string quarterback.

Kellen Mond attended the 49ers’ local Pro Day — he was one of the few NFL veterans the 49ers invited, and the only veteran quarterback. Which means the 49ers wanted to get a good look at him before the upcoming draft. And that’s a smart thing to do.

The 49ers should sign Mond. They need four quarterbacks for OTAs, minicamp and training camp, and Mond would be better and more talented than any late-round pick the 49ers could draft, considering he was a third-round pick three years ago and he’s only 24-years old. Plus, Mond has been on NFL rosters and practice squads, so he’s further along in development than a rookie sixth-round pick ever will be.

In addition, once Mond learns the offense and gets comfortable on the team, he will prove to be better than the 49ers’ current third-string quarterback, Brandon Allen. Allen will be 32 next season. He has no potential as a player. He’s a glorified quarterback coach. The 49ers don’t need him anymore.

They need a young backup quarterback with upside. Someone who could take Joshua Dobbs’ spot when Dobbs is a free agent next year. And Mond is similar to Dobbs, because Dobbs has bounced around the league and played for eight different teams. He was two different practice squads. And now, he’s 29 and he’s a quality second-string quarterback.

That could be Mond, too. He’s mobile, he’s smart and he has a strong arm. Let’s see what the 49ers can do with him.
