Wrexham moved one step closer to back-to-back promotions on Tuesday night with a big win over play-off hopefuls Crawley Town.
Wrexham sit 2nd in the League Two table with just three games left to play. Mansfield Town behind them hold a game in hand, as do leaders Stockport County, but the chasing pack in the play-offs are now five points back.
The Crawley Town game could have been a banana skin amid their own impressive rise but Phil Parkinson’s side emerged 4-1 winners. With all fellow promotion hopefuls winning too, it was a valuable victory on home turf.
It’s no secret that Wrexham boast stars in their ranks who could arguably be playing at far higher levels. Paul Mullin, Elliot Lee, Andy Cannon and more are the big names, but one who deserves serious praise and could start to draw admiring glances is centre-back Max Cleworth.
A long-serving starlet
Chester-born Cleworth spent time with Connah’s Quay Nomads as a youngster but the 21-year-old has now been with Wrexham since 2014. He’s got 84 first-team appearances to his name and had played plenty of National League football, but this season, Cleworth has cemented his place as one of the most promising players on the books at the Racecourse.
He’s a bit of an outlier in a squad largely made up of older players who have been tested at a higher level. However, since coming into the starting XI around Christmas, Cleworth has been in undroppable form.
