Aston Villa: Don Goodman shares verdict after Fabrizio Romano update on Jaden Philogene

Aston Villa: Don Goodman shares verdict after Fabrizio Romano update on Jaden Philogene.

Don Goodman does not expect Aston Villa to re-sign Jaden Philogene in the summer, but says they may one day regret letting him go.

Philogene departed Villa Park for Hull City last September in a £5million deal [Birmingham Live] and has caught the eye in the Championship.

Fabrizio Romano claimed in February that “multiple clubs in the Premier League” are keeping a close eye on the 22-year-old.

The Mirror reported on 23 March, meanwhile, that Villa have the chance to sign Philogene for £15m in the summer as part of a buy-back agreement.

While Goodman is a fan of Philogene, he believes the decision to bring in Morgan Rogers from Middlesbrough makes Villa’s stance clear.

“If they hadn’t have bought Morgan Rogers from Middlesbrough then perhaps they would have moved for Philogene,” Goodman told Villa News.

“At Premier League level, if you switch off when you don’t have the ball then you are completely and utterly punished.

“So I don’t envisage Aston Villa paying £15m at this point to take him back to the football club, albeit he could go on to have an incredible career. I just don’t think at this point it’s the way Aston Villa want to go.”

Philogene was on target for Hull City in their 3-1 win at Cardiff City on Saturday (6 April) to end his six-game drought without a goal involvement.

The England Under-21s international, despite that recent blip of sorts, now has nine goals and six assists in 26 Championship outings.

Having also showed potential at Villa and on various loans elsewhere, it is not massively surprising that other clubs are now showing an interest.

There has been a suggestion that the Villans may consider re-signing Philogene for £15m, just to sell him on for more in the same window.
