White Sox Drenched by Braves in Rain-Shortened Series Opener.
The Chicago White Sox completed their rain-shortened series opener against the Atlanta Braves on Monday, losing 9-0 in eight innings. Following a rain delay, the teams briefly resumed play, and things went from bad to worse for Chicago. Atlanta starter Charlie Morton stifled the White Sox offense while the Braves lineup showed why they’re one of the game’s best.
The Braves blanked the White Sox, who have been shut out twice by opponents in four games. Yoan Moncada had two of the White Sox’ three hits, each off of Morton. The South Siders threatened in the first inning when they loaded the bases with two outs, but Paul DeJong struck out to end the inning.
Inept Offense
Moncada doubled to lead off the third inning, but the Braves starter retired the next 11 hitters he faced before exiting the game with two outs in the sixth.
The White Sox only reached base once more in the contest with Moncada’s two-out walk in the eighth.
Chris Flexen toed the rubber for the first time in a White Sox uniform. The righty, signed in the offseason, lasted only 4.1 innings in his 2024 debut. He struggled with control, as he did in the Cactus League. After Flexen retired the first seven hitters he faced, the Braves offense teed off on the veteran.
One of The Best
Atlanta scored four times on Flexen, ending his team debut. He fanned one, issued three walks, and surrendered six hits.
“That’s a good team over there. Everybody knows it,” White Sox manager Pedro Grifol said of the loss. “When you don’t pitch in leverage counts against those guys, that tends to really play in their favor.”
