According to Field Yates of ESPN, the Texans restructured the contract of Tytus Howard by converting $12.875 million of his base salary into a signing bonus, adding two void years, freeing up $10.3 million in cap space. The Texans should have around $31.9 million in cap space, per Over The Cap.
As a result, his base salary drops from $14 million to $1.125 million, and his cap number drops from $18.705 million to $8.045 million for 2024.
Finally, his $12.875 million signing bonus will be spread evenly over the next five years at a value of $2.575 million. Since his contract restructure adds two void years, he will have a dead cap hit of $5.15 million when he becomes an unrestricted free agent in 2027.
Tytus Howard signed a 3-year contract extension during the 2023 offseason.
The Texans and Howard agreed to a 3-year, $56 million contract extension on July 26, 2023.
General Manager Nick Caserio praised Howard for being a good player after they re-signed him.“Tytus has been a good player for the last number of years,” Caserio said. “… It was good working with his team and his representation.”
Tytus Howard was limited to seven games in C.J. Stroud’s rookie season.
The Texans placed Howard on injured reserve for the first four games because of a broken hand.
Howard returned in Week 5 and started at left guard because the Texans signed George Fant to play RT. During the time he was on IR, Juice Scruggs started the season on IR with a hamstring injury, Kenyon Green suffered a season-ending shoulder injury during the preseason, Kendrick Green suffered a season-ending meniscus tear in Week 4, and Josh Jones suffered a hand injury in Week 3, missing time.
Howard played the next seven games and had zero penalties, one sack allowed, and a 46.8 PFF Grade in 408 offensive snaps. He suffered a season-ending knee injury in Week 12.
