Hull City’s chief scout Stuart White has given a fascinating insight into the inner workings of the club’s recruitment setup at the MKM Stadium.
White, a former head scout at City’s Championship rivals West Brom, arrived at the club shortly after recruitment boss Lee Darnbrough in 2017 and has been working at the club ever since amid a 30-year career, plying his trade under Leonid Slutsky, Nigel Adkins, Grant McCann, Shota Arveladze and now Liam Rosenior.
It’s under Rosenior and following Acun Ilicali’s takeover in January 2022 when things really began to hot up and White explained exclusively to the 1904 Club podcast how the club’s dealings have taken shape, and how the profile of players has changed somewhat based on the head coach’s demands.
White also goes into detail on how City were able to snare Regan Slater from Sheffield United for just £50,000 and turn him into one of the Championship’s most revered midfielders, as well as a terrace favourite. White explains how understanding the value of a player does occasionally have an impact on going to watch them play, but not always.
“Sometimes you’re going to watch specific players so you’ve already done a degree of homework on them, you know their situation, you know their likely value. Obviously, there’s no point us going to watch certain players that are going to be beyond us.
