A brace from Andy Cannon and a goal from Paul Mullin proved decisive for Wrexham against Grimsby and Parkinson has explained that he tried to line up in a way that would shock their opponents, with Elliot Lee deployed in a No.10 role. And the result led to a delighted tweet from Rob McElhenney.

WHAT PARKINSON SAID

Parkinson told reporters: “We changed the shape slightly. We put Elliot Lee in behind the front-two because I knew Grimsby had worked very hard in their preparation to stop us and it really worked for us.

“It gave us a different dimension. Tom (O’Connor) is great at just picking up pieces and filling the holes when other players go forward and we scored some great goals.”
