Snell’s decision to sign with the Giants follows a prolonged period of free agency, similar to other Scott Boras clients like Cody Bellinger and Matt Chapman, who also secured deals after spring training began. This agreement grants Snell a higher average annual value in exchange for a shorter contract length, with the added benefit of allowing him to re-enter free agency next offseason in hopes of a more robust market.
For the Giants, Snell’s signing caps off a busy offseason marked by significant acquisitions. They’ve bolstered their roster with talent, adding Korean center fielder and leadoff hitter Jung Hoo Lee on a six-year, $113 million deal in December, along with power hitter Jorge Soler on a three-year, $42 million deal in February. Additionally, they traded for former Cy Young Award winner Robbie Ray and signed Jordan Hicks, who will transition to a starting pitcher role.
The Giants’ late offseason moves included securing Matt Chapman on March 1 with a three-year, $54 million deal, just 18 days before finalizing Snell’s agreement. Snell, who spent the past three seasons with the Padres, returns to a division that has seen significant investments, particularly from the Los Angeles Dodgers.
