Player Crystal Palace sold for just £20million now receives international call up as he continues to shine

Last summer, Crystal Palace sold a young talent who has since gone on to shine in France, now he’s been handed an international call-up.

Crystal Palace will likely be in the market for a new centre-back this summer with concerns over losing Marc Guehi and Joachim Andersen to interest from other sides.

With Oliver Glasner opting for a three at the back formation, he needs more than three cnetre-halve who are capable of starting – but right now he has just three.

Therefore losing another could be catastrophic to his plans for next season. But this could’ve been avoided had the Eagles managed to hold onto Jake O’Brien.

Now the 22-year-old is reaching new heights…

Jake O’Brien handed Ireland call-up

This week ahead of the international break, O’Brien was named in John O’Shea and Paddy McCarthy‘s latest Ireland squad.

The Irish man was clear proud to be handed his first call-up, replying to the announcement on X with a heart and the Irish flag emojis.

He joins an increasingly positive looking Ireland squad packed with talent players, with a few potentially being excellent signings for Palace.

O’Brien’s career has only improved since being sold by Palace last summer for £1m and after his first full season at Lyon, he could even be on the move back to the Premier League after Everton were interested during the winter.

Selling Jake O’Brien was a mistake from Crystal Palace

Losing O’Brien for so cheap, only for him to go onto be worth multiples of this amount a year later is a transfer failure no matter which way it’s looked at.

O’Brien could have easily played a role in this Palace side, or been loaned out to prove his quality before a permanent sale was made.

This summer as Palace look for some bargains to replace Guehi should he be sold, they’ll no doubt be ruing the choice to sell O’Brien.

He’s a dominant aerial defender and could add some physical prowess to the Palace defence, and given he’s still within John Textor’s group of clubs, a return to Selhurst Park cannot be ruled out.
