West Ham United: Pundit blown away by ‘absolutely magnificent’ moment in Burnley clash

West Ham conceded an “absolutely magnificent” goal against Burnley in their 2-1 defeat at the London Stadium on Sunday (10 March), Sky Sports pundit Aaron McLean said.

The lowly Clarets went behind after 11 minutes after a brilliant long-range effort from Chelsea loanee David Datro Fofana.

An own goal from Konstantinos Mavropanos put West Ham further behind before Lucas Paqueta pulled a goal back before half-time as the Hammers trailed 2-1 at the break.

McLean, speaking on Sky Sports News (10 March), said: “It’s an absolute screamer and it’s from Fofana, the 21-year-old on loan from Chelsea.

“He receives the ball, he’s about 30 yards out, takes a touch in between Nayef Aguerd and Kalvin Phillips, middle of the goal just lets fly from 25 yards, smashes it over the top of Alphonse Areola and into the back of the net.

“It’s an absolutely magnificent strike and nothing less than what Burnley deserve because West Ham have started the game really slow, Burnley have been the team in the ascendancy and finally they’ve got the first goal to show for it.”

Danny Ings thought he had scored late on to rescue a point for the home side but it was ruled out.

It was not a great start at all from the Hammers at London Stadium and definitely was not the sort of response they were looking for early doors after their damaging 1-0 difficult at Freiburg in the first leg of their Europa League last-16 tie.

Sometimes, you just have to accept you have conceded an excellent strike, though, and that is what happened here from a West Ham point of view as Fofana let fly from long range and put the visitors in front.
