Lincoln City Manager Reveals Supersub’s Frustration
Lincoln City manager Michael Skubala has revealed supersub Jack Moylan was frustrated to be left out of yesterday’s starting lineup in their 5-1 win over Barnsley at Oakwell.
The 22-year-old joined the Imps from League of Ireland outfit Shelbourne in January and earned his first start in last week’s 0-0 draw with Stevenage. Despite impressing, he dropped back to the bench in the visit to Yorkshire yesterday.
Joe Taylor had handed Lincoln a 1-0 lead after 15 minutes, but Barnsley grew into the game and ended the half strongly as they searched for an equaliser. Skubala opted to make a half time change, bringing Moylan on for attacker Freddie Draper as he looked to add a bit of stability in the middle of the park.
The Irishman made an instant impact, netting his first goal for the club after a driving run that caught the Tyke’s defence off guard. He then played a major role in Danny Mandriou’s third before hitting a stunner of a strike from 30+ yards to give the visitors a four-goal lead.
Adam Phillips pulled a goal back for the hosts, although it proved in vain as Moylan once again cut through Barnsley’s back line. Picking the ball up in his own half, the attacker drove into the box in search of a hat trick, forcing a save from goalkeeper Liam Roberts. However, Jovon Makama, who had only been on the pitch a matter of minutes, was on hand to tap into an empty net.
It was a stunning win for the East Midlands side, who have extended their unbeaten run to 11 games and are just six points off the play-offs. Speaking after the game, via the club’s official website, Skubala revealed that Moylan was frustrated to have found himself back amongst the substitutes:
“Jack was perhaps frustrated because he didn’t start but that’s what the group has got – everyone wants to be a part of this team.
“We know he has the ability to be really good out of possession, and what pleased me was how connected we were without the ball. We were aggressive when we needed to be and in the end our intensity and energy was a little too much for them.”
The former Leeds United coach was full of praise for the rest of his squad too, as well as the near-2,000 fans who travelled to the game:
“We started the game really bright and we knew we had to stop them from the front as we couldn’t come and dominate the ball – we knew we had to catch them in transition and I think that worked.
“All the goals were great finishes. We took our chances to really show our quality in the final third and in the second half we were bang on.
“What a support we had – these guys have travelled to watch these guys and be a part of it. They wanted to see energy and we gave them that”
Lincoln now face two home games over the course of the next week against Cambridge United and Bristol Rovers as they continue their unlikely pursuit of a top six finish.
