Could Rangers See Another Reclamation Project In Jose Barrero
Perhaps the Texas Rangers have another reclamation project in mind. The club claimed infielder/outfielder Jose Barrero off waivers from the Cincinnati Reds on Saturday. They placed right-hander Carson Coleman, who they selected from the New York Yankees in December’s Rule 5 Draft, on the 60-day injured list. Coleman, 25, is still recovering from right elbow surgery in early 2023. Barrero was the Reds’ Opening Day shortstop last season but
spent most of the season in Triple-A after struggling with a .218 average in 46 games. The Cuba native was signed as a minor league free agent in June 2017, the same year the St. Louis Cardinals signed fellow Cuban Adolis García. The Rangers acquired García for cash in December 2019 after he struggled in the Cardinals organization. Barrero, who turns 26 on April 5, batted .258 with 19 home runs, 17 doubles, and four triples in 80 Triple-A games in 2023. He had an MLB slash line of .186/.242/.255/.497, four homers, and 32 RBI in 139 games between 2020 and 23.
Coleman was named the Eastern League “Reliever of the Year” after going 2-3 with 15 saves and a 2.86 ERA (14 ER/44.0 IP) in 35 relief appearances for Double-A Somerset in 2022. He pitched three seasons at the University of Kentucky and signed as a non-drafted free agent with the Yankees on June 14, 2020. The Rangers have 60 players in their Major League camp, including 37 on the 40-man roster, 23 non-roster invitees, and Coleman on the 60-day Injured List.
