Philadelphia Phillies fans had mixed feelings when former first baseman Rhys Hoskins signed a two-year, $34 million deal to play for the Milwaukee Brewers in January. It was a bittersweet moment to see the homegrown slugger depart, but the news wasn’t unexpected, with Bryce Harper slated to take over regular first base duties this season. Goodbyes are never easy.
Hoskins, who suffered a season-ending knee injury during spring training in 2023, rallied hard to make it back in time to play in the postseason but physically wasn’t quite ready by the time the Phillies faced off against the Arizona Diamondbacks in the NLCS last year.
Phillies fans would get one last glimpse of Hoskins in a Phillies uniform. Before Game 1 of the NL Wild Card Series versus the Miami Marlins, Hoskins threw out the ceremonial first pitch in front of a packed and raucous Citizens Bank Park.

While Hoskins’ performance on the field is worthy of praise, his leadership in the clubhouse is something the team won’t easily replace.
