Gary O’Neil will be delighted as Wolves gem impresses again out on loan

Wolves defender Yerson Mosquera caught the eye again at the weekend, as Villarreal defeated Granada 5-1 in La Liga.

The Colombia international is on loan with the Spanish outfit and is hoping to get as many minutes as he can between now and the end of the season.

He enjoyed an ‘outstanding’ loan spell with FC Cincinnati last year, and the hope now for Mosquera is that he becomes an influential player for Villarreal.

Mosquera was handed another start by Marcelino for Sunday’s La Liga match with Granada.

It was his fifth appearance since joining and interestingly, Villarreal are yet to lose a game that he has played in.

Yesterday was Mosquera’s fourth straight start, and he put in an assured performance at the back.

According to Sofascore data, the youngster completed 47/55 (85%) passes, won 5/6 duels, produced two tackles and a whopping eight clearances.

It was an easy win for Villarreal, who will have been disappointed to concede a goal in injury-time. That goal was actually scored by none other than Theo Corbeanu, who left Wolves in January on a permanent transfer.

There was actually a fairly big Wolves influence in this game, with Molineux loanee Goncalo Guedes also getting on the scoresheet for Villarreal. He struck their fourth goal shortly after the restart.

A great start

Mosquera has broken into the Villarreal team straight away and has already made an impression.

Their captain Raul Albiol recently talked up the Wolves youngster and what a big future he has, and it seems like he’s well on track to return to Wolves this summer ready to be a first-teamer in 2024/25.

Mosquera was so unlucky to suffer the serious hamstring he did in his first season at Molineux.

Who knows how different things could have been had that not happened. But the £4.5 million star has worked hard to get to the point he’s at now and he is surely sending Gary O’Neil a message from afar.

He’s already on the manager’s radar. It was reported last month that O’Neil actually refused a permanent offer from Villarreal for Mosquera.
