Relegation-threatened Birmingham City rocked by major blow for crucial Hull City trip

The pair meet at the MKM Stadium on Tuesday night

Birmingham City will be without influential defender Dion Sanderson for Tuesday night’s crunch clash under the MKM Stadium lights against Hull City.

Sanderson was given his marching orders by referee James Bell just after the hour for a challenge on midfielder Will Smallbone with the Blues going on to lose 4-3 in a thrilling St Andrew’s contest, but the defeat leaves them 20th in the Championship, one of four teams level on 38 points with Stoke City who occupy the final relegation spot.

Skipper Sanderson is now set to be sidelined for the next three games after his straight red card, meaning the visit to City on Tuesday night will be the first of his suspension.

Standing in for Tony Mowbray as the Blues boss continues to recover from illness, caretaker boss Mark Venus expressed his displeasure at what proved to be a crucial decision.

“Football is all about everybody having an opinion on everything,” Venus said. “For me, I’m going to say it wasn’t a red card. I don’t think it was. I don’t think there was any intent, I don’t think there was any malice, I don’t think he tried to hurt him.
