New York Jets QB Zach Wilson to the Minnesota Vikings in the Latest 2024 Trade Projection
Zach Wilson was once one of the biggest names in the NFL when he got drafted No. 2 overall in the 2021 NFL Draft. However, after three seasons of sub-par play with the New York Jets, the Jets and Wilson have agreed to move on from each other. This is a good breakup for both sides. The Jets have in a way destroyed the confidence and morale of Wilson who is looking for a new opportunity, and the Jets need to look in a new direction, at least for a backup behind Aaron Rodgers who only has a few more years to play.
The Curious Case of Zach Wilson
Zach Wilson is a very interesting player. His stats and production on the field suggest that he should probably be out of a job. However, at the same time, the flashes of excellence and the kind of throws that Wilson can make from time to time are just too attractive to let go of in the NFL.
This past season, there were times when Wilson outplayed statistically Patrick Mahomes and Josh Allen. Despite having outings where he played like a true NFL starter, overall, his statistics as a whole rated him towards the bottom of the league. There was a span of 36 straight possessions this past season where the Jets did not score a touchdown.
Minnesota Vikings Make a Lot of Sense
A week after the Jets announced that they would officially be willing to trade the former BYU star, Wilson still doesn’t have a new home, and there haven’t been a ton of teams appearing to reach out. Some have suggested that for Wilson to be traded, there may need to be a third or fourth round draft pick tagged along with him.
However, the Minnesota Vikings seem to be at least be somewhat interested, particularly if their franchise quarterback decides to leave. Kirk Cousins is a free agent this season and very well could want to go to another team.
Currently, the backup quarterbacks for the Vikings are not all that impressive, and certainly not as impressive as what Zach Wilson would bring, especially if another starter was brought in alongside Wilson. Currently, the backups are:
Joshua Dobbs – Played well for a game, then really struggled late, ultimately getting benched.
Nick Mullens- Been around the league for five years and has never really proved to be a great backup
Jaren Hall – 2nd year quarterback who showed some potential, however has concussion history. Solid third option, but tough to invest as a true backup.
Interestingly, Jaren Hall was Wilson’s backup when at BYU and would make for a potentially awkward but interesting QB battle between the two players.
