Ex-Yankees pitcher progressing on Red Sox deal, report says | Will it get done?
Jordan Montgomery may end up back in the AL East.
Red Sox manager Alex Cora confirmed a Monday report from ESPN’s Buster Olney that the Red Sox have recently met with the free-agent starter.
“He’s right, Buster’s right,” Cora said, via Ian Browne of MLB.com. “We Zoomed with [Montgomery], but we’ve been Zooming with a lot of people throughout the offseason. I’m not going to get into specifics but, yeah, it’s part of the process and it was a while ago, too.”
According to Browne, Cora said the meeting took place right before spring training.
MLB insider Peter Gammons reported Monday morning that a National League executive said, “We hear the Red Sox and Scott Boras had a good meeting recently and may get some deal eventually done on Jordan Montgomery.”
Montgomery is coming off of a stellar season in which he put up 3.20 ERA over 188 2/3 innings pitched for the
Cardinals and Rangers last year in the regular season. He then helped lead the Rangers to the World Series.
The 31-year-old also spent six seasons with the Yankees, who traded him to the Cardinals in 2022 for outfielder Harrison Bader.
