Hull City 1-0 Watford: Ozan Tufan penalty ends Watford's play-off hopes - BBC Sport

The 5 Hull City players likely to exit the MKM Stadium from June onwards

A strong season for the Tigers could see some of their key players depart

Hull City have their sights set on promotion contention come the end of this season, and look to be mounting a real challenge as we enter the final run-in

Having steadily built season-on-season since clinching the League One title in the 2020/21 season, the natural next step is attempting to achieve a Championship play-off place.

They look real contenders for that this season, but on account of the impressive performances they have put in, there are players that have found it difficult to break into the side, and others that may begin to attract attention when the summer transfer window comes around.

Here are five players that could depart the MKM Stadium at the end of this season..

Jacob Greaves Jacob Greaves has been with his hometown club since childhood, and has been recorded as saying it would be his dream to lead the side all the way to the Premier League.

However, should the Tigers miss out on promotion this time around, there is likely to be a queue of top-level sides wanting to capture the 23-year-old’s signature.

At such a young age, especially for a centre-back, Greaves has already made 39 League One appearances and over 120 Championship appearances. The fact that he is a left-footer makes him a rarer entity still, and will only serve to increase his value.

In the past, the defender has been linked with a move to Nottingham Forest, Aston Villa, and AS Roma, and another strong season in the heart of a promotion-chasing Championship is going to have done little to dissuade interested parties.

If Hull don’t achieve the promotion dream this season, Greaves could be one player they may have trouble keeping.

Having moved from Premier League side Villa last summer as part of a £5million deal, the young winger has announced his arrival in English football with a bang this season.

Not only has he popped up with a Puskas-worthy Rabona finish recently against Rotherham United, his attacking numbers outside are also noteworthy too.

His deal to move from the Villans in the summer included a buy-back clause that would see the young star available to his former club for £15 million if they achieve promotion unless a higher offer came in from another club.

Philogene insists that his mind is currently only focused on the Tigers, but there is certainly enough talent in the 22-year-old to interest a top club, and an offer that is difficult to refuse could easily be tabled this summer.

38-year-old veteran striker Billy Sharp joined the Tigers in December, having spent the previous year with MLS side LA Galaxy, on a short-term deal until the end of the season.

Sharp has already played a role in the side during the first few weeks of his stint with Hull, with manager Liam Rosenior saying on his arrival: “We’ve got an exciting, young, attacking group of players but what I found in my experience of promotion, and Billy has five, is that when you get to April and May, you need people who have been there, seen it and done it.”

As I was slowly removing my layers having sloped back to the car after the game prior to facing the M1, a similarly beleaguered soul trod glumly past and spoke, half to me, half to himself.  “Well at least the car park is empty.  Because everyone buggered off early.  That’s something I suppose”.

When you’ve actively supported Watford – or any fair to middling side, I guess – for any length of time you can usually readily recall from the back catalogue at least one miserable defeat against any regular opponent.  Glancing at the top of the Championship table…  Leicester: any number of perfunctory 2-0 away defeats of course (Vardy, pen) but particularly our most recent Premier League game with boss-in-waiting Rob Edwards in attendance.  Leeds: I

missed Elland Road this season, but the Dominic Poleon game surely the worst. Southampton? Being smashed by a Rickie Lambert hat-trick a year earlier.  Ipswich? This One. West Brom?  Any number of defeats at the Hawthorns in the nineties with Bob Taylor or Lee Hughes running riot.
