Wolves just did something that they haven’t achieved since 1972 in Sheffield Utd win
Wolves were victorious in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon at Molineux, beating Sheffield United 1-0 in a win that marked more than just three points.
Wolves climbed up to 8th in the table with a 1-0 win over Sheffield United at Molineux on Sunday, a victory that saw Gary O’Neil’s side move closer to the European spots.
Due to results elsewhere on matchday 26 of the Premier League season, the Old Gold leapfrogged Newcastle United, West Ham United and Chelsea to move just one point below Brighton in 7th place.
It was Pablo Sarabia’s goal in the 30th minute of play that won the game for the hosts, however, the goal stood for far more than just the match-winner.
The record that Wolves broke against Sheffield United
Sarabia’s goal was Wolves’ 40th of the season, which after 26 games, marks the quickest time that the club have hit such a milestone in their Premier League history.
You’d have to go back to the 1971/72 campaign to recall the last time that the Midlands club hit 40 goals in less time than 26 top-flight games, with the squad that year reaching 40 goals in 23 games.
Bill McGarry’s side finished 9th that season in the first division, and with O’Neil’s XI currently sitting in 8th, the Midlands club could see their league finish soar once more if their form continues.
The goals weren’t the only significant part of the victory over Sheffield United, with the win being Wolves’ 11th of the campaign, which is how many games Julen Lopetegui’s side won in the entirety of last season.
What Gary O’Neil has done at Wolves
While it was Sarabia’s goal, it was O’Neil who can be credited as the pioneer at Molineux, with the Englishman continuing to impress during his first season with the squad.
Last term, Wolves ended the season as the 2022/23 Premier League’s lowest scorers, netting just 31 goals in 38 games.
After hitting 40 goals on matchday 26 this term, O’Neil’s side have scored an outstanding 21 goals more than they did at this stage last year, telling of the work the 40-year-old has done in such a short space of time.
By encouraging positive and free-flowing football, the Englishman is getting the best out of his players all over the pitch, which was visible today even when the momentum dropped.
Sitting just one point off 7th place, the position that saw Aston Villa claim a spot in Europe this year, O’Neil could now drive Wolves towards a European finish, in what would round off a truly remarkable season.
