This comes from NBC Sports Bay Area’s Alex Pavlovic, who confirmed that a familiar face along with some Giants legends are expected to be in camp as instructors.

It is great to see that all of these names will be involved with the team’s camp in some way, shape, or form. This is especially true for Dave Righetti, who served as the team’s pitching coach from 2002 – 2017 and has been well-regarded in that role. It seems like Melvin and pitching coach Bryan Price are seeking a return to a more traditional way of using a pitching staff, so it makes sense that they would involve the old-school Righetti, who so masterfully handled the pitching staff during the championship years.

With so many young players in camp, it will surely be of some benefit for them to be able to pick the brains of someone like Barry Bonds or Buster Posey. That is one of the great things about the Giants making a concerted effort to keep their former players, and especially their former legends, in the fold.

It not only makes fans happy to see them involved, but these legends also serve as an invaluable resource as many of these young players try to navigate their way through being a major league ballplayer.

It would surprise no one to see former players like Hunter Pence or Ryan Vogelsong eventually become actual members of the big league coaching staff. The team already has former Giant Pat Burrell as their hitting coach.

Some fans may deride this as cheap nostalgia, but it absolutely is not. The Giants only stand to benefit from having former players with deep organizational ties try to help the next wave of players get ready for the season and beyond.
