Jacksonville Jaguars: Will Josh Allen Get Franchise Tagged in 2024?

The Jacksonville Jaguars are in an interesting position as they are going to need to decide if they are going to franchise tag linebacker Josh Allen this offseason. If the team extends the franchise tag than he would be paid an estimated $22.8 million next season fully guaranteed. However, Jaguars general manager Trent Baalke has not announced whether he will use the franchise tag on Allen or not.

The only thing that he has said about these negotiations is a simple phrase for the Duval faithful.

But would the better option be the franchise tag or would there be the chance that there is a long-term extension agreed upon?

Would Josh Allen being franchise-tagged be the best option for the Jacksonville Jaguars?

The Jacksonville Jaguars are going to need to come up with a better plan than to franchise tag their best defensive player. They have other positions that they need to address and can use the franchise tag for, like wide receiver Calvin Ridley. We’ve seen some incredible talents already hit the open market and the Jaguars can ill-afford a similar situation.

Baalke discussed during the end-of-season press conference about how the Montez Sweat four-year, $98 million extension with the Chicago Bears could be a starting point for a long-term deal.“I think every situation is different. When I look at a player, does he deserve to be paid or doesn’t he? Whether he’s a draft pick of ours or a free agent that’s come in or a free agent from some other team. Do they deserve to get paid? You hope to not pay a premium on a guy that you’ve drafted, simply because you get to do it a year earlier. The market hasn’t had a chance to weigh in on it. You also want to pay guys fairly.”

Josh Allen had a spectacular season in 2023 when he was not extended but played on his fifth-year option. He posted 66 total tackles (43 solo, 23 assisted) with 17.5 sacks, two forced fumbles, an interception and a pass deflection en route to his second Pro Bowl appearance. Allen wants to stay with the team so get him a long-term deal that is fair for both sides.
