Exeter City don’t take their chance as ‘little moments’ cost them

“It was very disappointing to walk away with nothing,”

Exeter City defender Ben Purrington admitted that the Grecians were left very disappointed to come away with nothing from their trip to Lincoln City. There was little between the two sides on Saturday, but fine margins at either end proved pivotal.

Jack Aitchison at one end for Exeter had the best chance of the game, but saw his effort pushed onto the crossbar. That was crucial as on 67 minutes, after a mistake by Pierce Sweeney, Joe Taylor calmly clipped a finish over Vil Sinisalo for what proved to be the winner.

The Grecians pushed for an equalizer, but couldn’t find one, as after three successive away wins, they slipped to a 1-0 defeat. The loss saw them drop down to 14 th , and was a game that being short on action, they should have come away with something from, despite not being at their best.

“It was very disappointing to walk away with nothing,” Purrington said. To come to Lincoln, it is a tough place to come, they made it a scrap, and was disappointing for the fans and a stalemate, the game passed us by.

“They took their chance, we didn’t take ours, and that determines the outcome. If we put that away and go 1-0, we take the three or at least one point. If we put that chance in, we take the three points. They have taken their chance, fair play to them, and that is the difference between the teams in the top ten and us at the moment and small margins.

“They probably played into our final third better than we did, they picked up more second balls, we limited them to little shots on target, but we had chances. Those little moments, we have to try and take them as they were few and far between, and it is one of them.”

The 27-year-old was making his return to action less than a month after being stretched off with a serious looking injury away to Bristol Rovers. The injury though was not as bad as first feared, but the January signing wasn’t expecting to be back in action so soon.

“I trained Thursday and Friday and then the gaffer said I’ll be starting,” he said. “I was back before I thought I would be, but I am delighted, been working hard to get back into the team. Now I have to work to keep that shirt.”
