Huddersfield Town’s outgoing caretaker boss makes ‘cruel’ Hull City claim
City notched a second away win this week with a late winner at the John Smith’s Stadium
Caretaker boss Jon Worthington admitted Jacob Greaves’ dramatic 94th-minute winning goal left Huddersfield Town deflated after losing 2-1 to Hull City.
After two wins in three, Town came into the game against City full of confidence but were a goal down inside the opening 10 minutes when Greaves turned in his first goal of the season but looked to have salvaged a point when Jack Rudoni thumped in the equaliser deep in stoppage time.
Straight from the restart, however, City surged forward and snatched the winner in front of their jubilant away supporters when Omur Abdulkadir’s smart cross was headed home by Greaves, who was making his 200th career appearance.
The result leaves Town perched just two points and two places above the drop zone after both Sheffield Wednesday and QPR notched valuable away wins, while City remain eighth level on points with sixth-placed Coventry.
“I’m deflated, so are the players,” Worthington said. “We were pretty dominant second half and the equaliser was fair. To switch off at the end was cruel; the players have been amazing for me. The game was pretty much as I expected it to be. First half the energy levels weren’t quite there. Second half we really re-energised. The subs gave us a little bit more impetus.
