The Luton Town captain suffered a cardiac arrest at the Vitality Stadium on December 16 – the second time it has happened in his career after previously collapsing in last season’s Championship play-off final at Wembley.

Lockyer received immediate medical attention from club staff and paramedics as he lay prone on the pitch before being rushed to hospital for further treatment and tests.

The match was then abandoned as both sets of players, staff and supporters inside the ground struggled with the upsetting scenes that had played out in front of them.

Lockyer was discharged four-days later and is continuing to recover but it is yet to be seen if he will ever play again following his second life-threatening health scare.

Hatters boss Edwards was one of the first on the scene as Lockyer dropped to the turf on the south coast as he sprinted from his technical area recognising the severity of the situation.

The 41-year-old has now explained his deep personal feelings at the time of the harrowing incident to The Athletic and admitted he broke down in front of his Luton players.
