Tigers acquire Padres lefty with international bonus money

LAKELAND, Fla. — The Detroit Tigers have acquired 6-foot-6 left-handed pitcher Blake Dickerson from the San Diego Padres for $500,000 in international bonus pool money.

Dickerson, 19, was selected by the Padres in the 12th round of last summer’s draft. The Padres gave him an over-slot bonus of $500,000 to get him to sign.

From the Tigers’ perspective, the trade is a way of reallocating money from the international market to the domestic market while perhaps saving $500,000 in the process.

Baseball America’s pre-draft scouting report said Dickerson “moves exceptionally well for a player of his size, with an easy delivery and fast arm that comes out of a three-quarter slot.”

BA ranked Dickerson as the Padres’ 22nd-best prospect going into 2024. Dickerson has yet to pitch in a professional game.

Before the trade, the Tigers had a bonus pool of $6.5 million to sign international amateur players in this cycle, while the Padres had only $4.6 million. It’s a hard cap, which means it cannot be exceeded
