Dwight Gayle considering shock move after disastrous spell at Stoke City
Former Newcastle United striker Dwight Gayle is considering a surprise move to League One strugglers Port Vale after his sudden departure from Stoke City last month.
The 34-year-old was prolific under Rafa Benitez in the Championship and has been involved in 83 goals in 145 Championship appearances, but his spell at Stoke was a disaster.
After leaving Newcastle 18 months ago and joining Stoke on a free transfer, he went on to score just three times in 50 appearances for the Potters, failing to score a single goal so far this season. His two-year deal was due to expire this summer, yet he had his contracted terminated early last month.
A few weeks later, Port Vale are trying to bring the former Crystal Palace forward to Vale Park, with new boss Darren Moore keen to be reunited with the man who he worked with during a loan spell at West Brom. Gayle scored 23 goals during that 2018/19 season in a move that allowed Newcastle to have Salomon Rondon.
Gayle still leaves in the Stoke area and is currently without a club, so a move to Port Vale could make sense and may come at the right time; even if it would represent a real drop down the divisions for the striker.
