Exeter City have ‘selection headaches’ of a good kind as Grecians travel to Lincoln City

As the buoyant Grecians head to Lincoln City today, looking for a fourth successive away win, it is not so much a case of who to pick that the City boss and his coaching staff must contemplate, but who to leave out

A promising sign of the strength in depth that a team has is always judged by what options there are on the bench and for Exeter City manager Gary Caldwell, he is enjoying the rare luxury of having ‘selection headaches’ right now. The first half of this season saw the Grecians suffer badly with injuries, leaving Caldwell short of options, both in terms of personnel and tactics, which played a large part in that poor run of form before Christmas.

But as the buoyant Grecians head to Lincoln City today, looking for a fourth successive away win, it is not so much a case of who to pick that the City boss and his coaching staff must contemplate, but who to leave out, such are the numbers now up for selection. It’s the kind of problem that every manager loves and loathes in equal measure.

“Since I came to the club, I have never had to leave good people and good players out of the squad,” Caldwell said. “I have never had big decisions to make on who starts, who plays and how we play, so to have the options and the quality we have now is really good, but it does give a problem in a different way of how we put that together.

“I think the key thing is the profile of player against the team we are playing against, hence why Will (Aimson) came in (against Derby County) on Tuesday night against a really speedy winger (Corey Blackett-Tyler) and I thought he was excellent in stopping him and defending well one-v-one.
