Wrexham's Max Cleworth looks on during a match

Wrexham: Sutton win a relief for Wrexham as they prepare for Notts County – Max Cleworth

Defender Max Cleworth says Wrexham are relieved to have halted a four-game losing streak as they prepare to host Notts County on Saturday.

A late Elliot Lee effort clinched a 2-1 midweek victory over Sutton United that lifted Wrexham to fourth in League Two.

The Dragons had lost three straight league games plus an FA Cup tie at Blackburn before the Sutton triumph.

“It was a much-needed win obviously, to get some confidence back,” Cleworth said.

“I think we knew it wasn’t going to be the nicest of games, constant throw-ins down the line – we had to stand up to that, But being a group and getting over the line was the most important thing.”

Despite Wrexham’s recent poor run, which included a 1-0 home defeat by Bradford City last Saturday, Cleworth maintains that the squad always had the belief that they would bounce back.

“We know how good we are as a team, and obviously the run we’ve had over the last few seasons has been incredible,” he added.

“I think you can overlook things at times, it’s just a blip – we’re still in a good position in the league.”

The Dragons’ attention now turns to Notts County, who were promoted to League Two alongside Wrexham last season.

Last term’s game between the sides at the Racecourse is still talked about, with Wrexham claiming a 3-2 victory last April which propelled them towards the National League title.

“I think obviously because of the rivalry there’s possibly an added edge to it, but it’s three points like any other game and we’ll approach it in exactly the same way,” Cleworth said.

“Obviously from last year we know how good a team they are, they’ve got some very good individual players, they’ve changed the manager and they’ll be coming here looking for the three points.”
