Milwaukee Brewers 1st Round Draft Pick Drawing Interest From San Diego Padres

The Milwaukee Brewers currently have a plethora of MLB ready talent in the outfield.  Recently we explored the possibility of the San Diego Padres, who are in desperate need of outfield talent at the big league level, being realistic trade partners or not.  Now a report from The Athletic has leaked that the Padres are indeed interested in one of the Crew’s top outfield talents.

Sal Frelick has been mentioned as a trade target for the San Diego Padres.

Per Dennis Linn of The Athletic, San Diego is exploring lots of various options to improve their major league outfield.  Linn specifically mentioned free agents Michael A. Taylor and Adam Duvall along with trade targets Jarren Duran of the Boston Red Sox and Sal Frelick of the Milwaukee Brewers.  His report indicated that these players names have come up in Padres discussions, but he did not say that they are any ongoing negotiations.

Is Sal Frelick an untouchable Milwaukee Brewers prospect?

The Brewers are never going to publicly announce if a player is untouchable or not, but they will always listen and entertain trade offers.  That being said Sal Frelick, who was drafted in the first round of the 2021 draft and possesses an excellent hit tool plus speed, will be virtually impossible to acquire at this point.  He has one extra year of team control when compared to his counterpart in Garrett Mitchell and Frelick doesn’t have the injury history with him like Mitchell.

Will a trade between the Brewers and Padres occur?

Milwaukee and San Diego have been trade partners before in the past.  In recent years players like Eric Lauer, Luis Urias, Esteury Ruiz, Robert Gasser, Josh Hader, and Victor Caratini have all been swapped at various times between the two organizations.  That’s not to say a trade involving Sal Frelick will occur, but there is a higher likelihood of someone like Garrett Mitchell, Joey Wiemer, or Blake Perkins being dealt instead.
