Ex-Blue Jays Starter Available; Yankees Could Land Hurler To Improve Rotation

The New York Yankees already have improved the club this offseason but another signing could make a lot of sense. New York’s biggest holes on the roster entering this offseason were the outfield and starting rotation. The Yankees

significantly improved the outfield by bringing in Juan Soto, Alex Verdugo, and Trent Grisham. The Yankees have addressed the rotation as well by bringing in Marcus Stroman in free agency. While this is the case, New York could use another hurler. The Yankees have been linked to both Jordan Montgomery and Blake Snell but it would be surprising if New York was willing to shell out the money needed to land either. New York still could improve the starting rotation, though. There are some very solid mid-tier options available with upside that could make sense.

One player who wouldn’t cost a lot but could go a long way to help New York is former Los Angeles Dodgers and Toronto Blue Jays starter Hyun-Jin Ryu. He is a free agent and still is looking for his next opportunity. He only was able to appear in 11 games with the Blue Jays last season but was solid with a 3.46 ERA and 38-to-14 strikeout-to-walk ratio. Ryu is a one-time All-Star and has a career 3.27 ERA in 10 seasons. If the Yankees want to add to the rotation still, Ryu immediately would raise the club’s floor. He is not flashy, but he has been very dependable when he’s been on the mound.

He is 36 years old and won’t cost too much. If New York wants to improve the club, why not take a chance on the former All-Star?
