Sir Anthony Hopkins takes on new Wrexham role as he joins Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney
The legendary Silence of the Lambs actor was described as a ‘key player in the transfer window
Sir Anthony Hopkins, the legendary Welsh actor known for his roles in The Silence of the Lambs, Hannibal, and Father, has taken on an unexpected role for Wrexham AFC.
The 86 year old, who has won two Academy Awards, four Bafta Awards, two Primetime Emmy Awards, and a Laurence Olivier Award, has teamed up with Hollywood stars and Wrexham AFC owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney.
After the transfer window closed, Reynolds posted on social media: “We picked up a key player in the transfer window. Sir Anthony Hopkins.”
This was accompanied by a video showing Hopkins at the Racecourse Ground, saying: “To act is to deceive. And to deceive one must forget oneself. Every metamorphosis is demanding but to become this beast, well, that requires a little extra kick.”
Sir Anthony then screams: “Now hear me roar”, before putting on the costume of mascot Wrex The Dragon, taking to the pitch, and engaging with the crowd as he says: “This is what they came to see. They love me. Roar.” The hilarious one-minute clip is an advert for Stok Cold Brew Coffee, the official stadium sponsor of Wrexham AFC.
Wrexham are currently second place in Football League Two and take on Salford City in an away match on Saturday. McElhenney and Reynolds recently scooped four Emmys for Welcome To Wrexham, the docuseries which first aired in August 2022 and was an instant hit, with the show now being in its second season. It won best unstructured reality series, directing, picture editing and cinematography and Reynolds gave an epic acceptance speech.
