Confirmed: Ipswich Town beat Leeds United to attacking “target” with 24 G/A this season

Leeds United were interested in signing AFC Wimbledon striker Ali Al-Hamadi this month, but Ipswich Town have won the race for the Iraq international.

Leeds’ transfer activity hasn’t been up to the pace of their promotion rivals this month, with a number of targets linked, but none signed as of yet.

Defence has to be a priority with three-and-a-half days left of the window, but an attacking signing could be very useful too.

Ali Al-Hamadi was on Leeds’ radar

AFC Wimbledon striker Ali Al-Hamadi has been in exceptional form this season in League Two and across other competitions.

South London Press reported earlier in the season that he was a striker very much on Leeds’ radar ahead of the January window.

At 21-years-old, he looked destined to make his way up the EFL ladder with his form for the Dons seriously impressive, scoring 17 and assisting a further seven in all competitions already.

However, Leeds have missed out on this reported target, with Ipswich Town confirming the signing of the 21-year-old this afternoon:

East Anglian Times reported a fee in excess of £1million is going to take the youngster to Portman Road, with Kieran McKenna likely eager to add to his injury-hit attack after seeing George Hirst ruled out for the rest of the season.

A good signing, but no lost sleep for Leeds

If we needed a striker who can do a bit of everything this month, then Al-Hamadi would have been a no-brainer.

However, we don’t really need to be prioritising a new centre-forward before Thursday’s deadline, so this doesn’t seem like a massive blow.

It’s a shrewd bit of business from the Tractor Boys, though, and certainly improves their front line significantly.
