Stoke City boss hopes to beat February 1 deadline with late transfer business

Steven Schumacher has made three signings so far in the January transfer window

Steven Schumacher is still hopeful that Stoke City can seal late January transfer business to help pull their way up a congested Championship table.

Stoke have paid the price for their profligacy to fall to back-to-back defeats to Birmingham and Sunderland – and it’s leaders Leicester up next – and Schumacher still wants to improve his squad before the mid-season deadline passes on Wednesday.

He has brought in three players so far, keeper Daniel Iversen on loan from Leicester and midfielder Luke Cundle on loan from Wolves – as well as young keeper Scott Morris – and his message about not taking chances leaves little doubt about where he would like to target.

“I hope so,” said the head coach, when asked about the chances of more deals. “If we can’t we go with what we’ve got and we’ve got to be better.”

Schumacher added that the current squad still has to get down to serious work on the training ground to ensure they make the necessary improvements for the final 17 matches of the season.

He said: “They’ve got to. If we don’t bring anyone else in there is no other option. We need results to get away from the bottom end of the table. If we can’t bring anyone in then the ones are playing have got to do better.
