‘Would’ve taken’: Phil Hay says Daniel Farke would happily have signed £200k midfielder this summer

Leeds United did plenty of work on their midfield this summer.

The Whites signed the likes of Ilia Gruev, Ethan Ampadu and Glen Kamara in the summer transfer window, and according to Phil Hay, speaking on The Square Ball Podcast, there’s another midfielder player that the Whites would’ve taken over the summer

Indeed, according to Hay, Kenny McLean is a player that Daniel Farke absolutely would’ve taken at Elland Road as he spoke about the Scottish midfielder after Leeds’ last game against Norwich City in the week.

Hay shared what he knows about the £200k midfielder.

“Norwich just got on top of them and McLean seemed to have a lot of space and time and he was a player that Farke would’ve taken in the summer if he could’ve got him and you can see why, he’s a really good footballer,” Hay said.

Farke had massive success in the Championship with Norwich City, and it’s no surprise to hear that he was open to the idea of taking McLean to Leeds.

Yes, Farke hasn’t raided Norwich since arriving at Leeds, but he has brought in Ethan Ampadu – a player he had on loan at one point at Carrow Road, while he was so close to signing Max Aarons in the summer before he headed to Bournemouth instead.

McLean would’ve been fantastic in this Leeds team, but in the end, Farke didn’t end up getting his man.

Who knows? Perhaps if Leeds aren’t promoted this season this avenue will open up again in the summer as McLean clearly has plenty left in the tank and he could be a big player for the Whites next season if they’re forced to regroup and go again in terms of a push for promotion.

McLean is clearly a player Farke admires, and given what he did for him at Norwich, it’s not hard to understand why.
