£13m star admits he is the ‘happiest’ he’s been at Leeds after joining the club under Marcelo Bielsa
Junior Firpo starred again for Leeds United on Wednesday night as the Whites secured a 1-0 win over Norwich City, a fifth win in a row – and Firpo admits he is the happiest he’s been since joining.
The 27-year-old came into the side against Birmingham City, and has started all five games since – in which Leeds have won. Firpo has played a big part, laying on an impressive four assists in that time.
On Wednesday night, Firpo was excellent again and could have notched a fifth assist had an overhead kick attempt from Patrick Bamford nestled in the net. He’s really starting to show some impressive form.
The kind of form Leeds might have hoped for when signing him from Barcelona for £13m back in the summer of 2021 – under Marcelo Bielsa. His form has not gone unnoticed, and not just at Elland Road.
Real Sociedad, who are in the knockout stages of the Champions League, had taken a look. They signed Javi Galan instead. Speaking to BBC Radio Leeds, Firpo said he’s the happiest he has been since joining.
“Yeah, probably [I’m the happiest he’s been at Leeds]. A few months ago, I did the podcast at Leeds – I told him that to come here from a different country, everything is different, playing in and out, injuries.
“Criticism from fans – it brings your confidence down. But we have a really good team, not just players but human beings, it helps you. It is the happiest I’ve been here,” Firpo said, after the win over Norwich.

It has been a difficult couple of years for Firpo. Just 61 games for Leeds in two and a half years. Injury and a lack of momentum meaning the former Barcelona man has failed to produce his best level of form.
But right now, Daniel Farke does seem to be getting the best out of him. Playing an attacking brand of football, it sees Firpo play to his strengths. It is only the Championship, but it is also very positive signs.
