NY Jets stealing possible Dolphins cap casualty could make for perfect offseason

Anyone who knows anything about the NY Jets is well aware of the team’s struggles on the offensive line and their dire need to get some better replacements in town as soon as possible. Mekhi Becton simply can’t be the top option at left tackle.

One such player could be plying his trade for a division rival in the Miami Dolphins, as their rough balance sheet and eventual quarterback extension coming down the road could be grounds for some of their best players getting kicked to the curb.

Miami is currently projected to be as much as $51 million over the salary cap, with only the perpetually in cap hell Saints in a worse position. Names like Xavien Howard will likely be cut loose in the name of saving money, which could make one very impactful offensive lineman available.

If the Dolphins designate left tackle Terron Armstead, who has had some injury troubles, as a post-June 1 cut, they could save around $9 million in cap space while spreading his dead cap over the next two seasons. With the tackle class looking quite weak, the Jets should pounce on the five-time Pro Bowler.

Could NY Jets target Dolphins OT Terron Armstead?

Of a potential 34 regular season games he could have played in during the last two seasons, Armstead has only played in 23. A big player like that on the wrong side of 30 usually doesn’t turn into Wolverine and become an indispensable starter, which could give the Jets some pause for thought.

Terron Armstead

When healthy, however, Armstead is one of the best linemen in the game. The Pro Bowl nods he has earned in the last few years are justified, as his mobility and mauling power haven’t waned when looking at what he put on tape with the New Orleans Saints.

Even with Notre Dame’s Joe Alt and Penn State’s Olu Fashanu within striking distance in what could become a very deep draft class for tackles, the Jets might decide to eschew that in favor of adding Armstead. New York could either trade down for more picks or take the best wide receiver available.

Armstead is going to make some team very happy, and there’s a chance Miami holds on to him as part of their quest to keep Tua Tagovailoa upright in the pocket. If he becomes free, however, it would be bordering on malpractice for the Jets not to check in.
