Red Sox Reportedly In Bidding War For Reunion With Free-Agent Slugger
The Boston Red Sox are less than one month away from pitchers and catchers reporting to spring training but still have a couple items on their agenda.
Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow is in search of another starting pitcher and a right-handed bat with some positional versatility. He reportedly has his eye on the latter.
“Red Sox and (Los Angeles) Angels are in the bidding for Adam Duvall,” the New York Post’s Jon Heyman reported Thurday. “Unless someone else comes in late, he’s likely to pick between those two teams.”
Duvall hit .247 with 47 extra-base hits including 21 homers, 58 RBIs and a 119 OPS+ in 2023 despite missing a good chunk of the season due to a wrist injury.
The 35-year-old would be a serviceable slugger to plug in on a short-term deal but is not the notable addition fans were seeking.
Barring an impact arm such as Jordan Montgomery or Blake Snell heading to Boston, it does appear that the Red Sox’s priority for 2024 is to cut costs.
