Cincinnati Reds trade Daniel Duarte to the Texas Rangers

The Cincinnati Reds and Texas Rangers made a trade this afternoon, with the Reds sending right-handed reliever Daniel Duarte to Texas. Cincinnati designated Duarte for assignment last week when they officially signed lefty reliever Brent Suter and needed a spot on the 40-man roster. The Rangers didn’t want to take their chances on the waiver wire and made Cincinnati a trade offer. The Reds will get back an undisclosed amount of cash in return for Duarte.

For Duarte, he’s returning to the organization that originally signed him out of Mexico back in 2013. He was with them for four seasons before the Kansas City Royals selected him in the minor league phase of the Rule 5 draft in December of 2017. They would release him following the 2019 season.

After signing with the Reds in 2020 and then again in 2021, Duarte would make his way to the big leagues in April of 2022, but an injury two weeks later put him on the injured list and he missed the next four months before returning at the end of the season. He would pitch in just three big league games that season.

Last season he began the year in the minor leagues with Triple-A Louisville, but found his way back to Cincinnati in the middle of June and went on to threw 31.2 innings with a 3.69 ERA in 31 games the rest of the way. Duarte entered the game with a runner on base seven times during the season but didn’t allow a single one of those runners to come around to score.

His control wasn’t great in his first 21 games with Cincinnati as he walked 10 batters and had 18 strikeouts over 20.2 innings through August. But when September rolled around his control went backwards as he walked 10 batters with just five strikeouts in 11.0 innings to close out his 2023 season with the Reds.
